A night of beach camping in Florida, USA

Fall is here, according to Instagram, littered with all the warmth of changing leaves and mentions of PSL (Pumpkin Spiced Lattes - as I have been informed of)… except for those of us living in the South. Mosquitos swarming in their mid-summer rage, cobweb artistry freshly draped across doorways and entrances and the scorching, very-much-summer sun.

Naturally, outdoor activities in general have been shyed away from. A favourite, hiking, is out of the question. What to do, what to do?

Well, having recently immigrated from Durban, South Africa (a coastal city with glorious beaches and sun-kissed tans), I have been desperate for some beach time- good old beach-laying, sea-swimming, frisbee-throwing down time.

So, I did what any outdoor-loving human should do (and that means YOU) and download the free app, i-overlander (game changer I tell ya). It basically provides a map of the world and documents all camping spots and other accommodation types, resources and food available nearby. People check in and out, review each spot and record amenities available.

I’m going on a whirlwind adventure next month, to South America, and wanted to try out the app as I’ll be using it when I’m there. We picked a camping spot from the app, called Peter’s Point Campground on Fernadina Beach in nearby Florida. Excitement escalating...

This is what happened //

We flew east to Fernadina Beach and landed at Fernadina Municipal Airport.

We hopped on our penny boards with backpacks in tow and skated the 2.5miles to the campsite from the airport. By skated, I mean sweated and wheezed. Heavy, really heavy packs.

We set up camp at Peter's Point Campground, freely, on the sand.

We swam, threw a frisbee, relaxed, ate chili warmed on our camp stove and showered in the public restrooms (they were warm, happy days).

We watched the sun go down and slept.

The only draw back is that cars are allowed on the beach- epic for campers when it’s their car parked there but for the other people burning donuts in the sand at night with their lights screaming, get lost!

All in all, we had a wonderful time, loved the app, were super stoked with how it all panned out and decided to roll our shabby selves to the adjacent Ritz Hotel for breakfast and Uber back to the airport (cue raucous laughter). It happened. The proof:

Hope you guys give it a try and have as great a time as we did.

Hit me up for a beach camp session ;)

All my love, Kate x
