The Best of Durban: Things to do in the coastal city

Updated: May 11, 2020

Durban, South Africa

a laid back coastal city

I'm a Durban local. I’ve lived, studied and worked in the laid back city that boasts eternal summer.

I’ve swum in the sea on a weekday, skated the perimeter of the glass-smooth concrete soccer stadium, cycled the length and breadth of the Golden Mile promenade and eaten far too many a spicy Afro’s Chicken dish in South Beach.

I have planned countless trips for tourists and returning friends, organized dates on a budget and racked my brain for social ideas in rainy weather that exclude bottles of wine, Netflix and eat-in pizza.

I have decided to write a series of posts for various groups of people relating to different aspects of Durban, the East Coast city with the warm Indian Ocean.

Choose the category you fit into and the rest is decided for you.

Choose your activities

Click the category of choice below and the activities are mapped out for you. Have fun ;)

No matter your workout preference, there is an activity linked to help you break a sweat. If you like to swim, cycle, skateboard, get your adrenaline pumping, hike, walk or fly, check these out.

This picturesque city with palm trees dancing and rolling waves has more to it than the beach. Whether your interests lie in museums, art Galleries, theatres and shows or music, Durban has something to offer you.

Family-friendly

Life with children is colourful. They have a refreshing perspective on the world, love to explore, and so many adults need child-friendly places to bring their families to visit where they feel safe, are entertained, have food nearby, and engaging activities that allow the kids to release some pent up energy.

So, it’s your turn to plan date night or you are meeting up with someone you want to impress but can’t think of anything interesting to do. Some are some simple ideas to help you—you can’t pull out all the stops on day one, or can you?

Life is manic, work is hectic, and you need to chill. Relax, take a stroll, peruse a market, picnic, or catch-up over a cuppa. Well, that’s the vibe Durban exudes isn’t it?

Whether you’re a student, teacher, working or not, entertainment is expensive. Don’t stay at home, Durban has things on offer for free or at a low cost.

Let me know what type of activities you're into in the comments below.

Much love,

Kate x
