Durban, South Africa, on a Budget

Updated: May 12, 2020

Whether you’re a student, teacher, working or not, entertainment is expensive. Don’t stay at home, Durban has things on offer for free or at a low cost. Have a look:

Beachfront Amusement Park

Open from 11am to 10pm on the weekend, Funworld is here to entertain with its carnival rides, paddling pools, carousel and a cable car chairlift with a view of the beachfront from the air (my personal fav). Rides are R14 per child, R17 per adult and the cable car and dodgems are R20 a piece. See you at 76 Marine Parade from the sky (I’ll be the one smuggling in the champagne and biltong).

Walk through Nature

Virginia Bush Nature Reserve (open daily from 7-4), Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve or Kloof Gorge (Krantzkloof Nature Reserve) offer beautiful trails to wander through. Go and explore. The Gorge has more relaxed trail but definite hikes for those after something more strenuous, too.

Swim

Durban has a warm Indian Ocean- take advantage, dive in, splash around, surf it, paddle it, tan near it, take selfies with it, skip stones in it, search for shells by it… just enjoy it!

Picnic

Botanical Gardens is a perfect picnic spot- it has colourful, diverse vegetation, manicured lawns, a lake and a cafe. Bake, make, take snacks and drinks to enjoy on the grass away from the weekend traffic.

Treat yo-self

A Milky Lane frozen ice-cream treat spot has opened up on Florida Road. "Full of Feelgood" ;)
